1115. [*Sojourner Truth] Gilbert, Olive. Narrative of Sojourner Truth: a Bondswoman of Olden Time, Emancipated by the New York Legislature in the Early Part of the Present Century; with a History of her Labors and Correspondence, drawn from her "Book of Life;" also, A Memorial Chapter, Giving the Particulars of Her Last Sickness and Death. Battle Creek: Review and Herald Office, 1884. frontis (portrait), 320, 32p. Recent quarterbinding (dark green cloth backed in dark green leather). Gilt oval portrait from original binding mounted on front cover. 19cm. Stains on upper half of frontis. Brown spots on title-page. Edges a bit ragged here and there (minor chipping & tears). Two former owner's names on back of half-title. Age-toning, especially in the "Memorial Chapter." Good. The first 128 pages print a version of the 1850 edition of her narrative (originally written by Gilbert, and revised for the 1875 edition by Frances W. Titus to make Sojourner Truth 20 years older than she really was and to eliminate or change other information). The "Book of Life" was compiled by Titus from scrapbooks kept by Sojourner Truth. The Memorial Chapter was written for this edition by Ms. Titus after the death of Sojourner Truth on November 26, 1883. [See item 956 for an item relating to Sojourner Truth long before she became known as Sojourner Truth] 1250.00

1116. [Maryland] Address of Republican State Convention, May 6, 1868. Baltimore: John W. Woods, Steam Book and Job Printer, [1868]. Broadside. 31 x 47cm. Margins heavily chipped (loss of a few text letters in lower left corner and portions of a few letters in title). Moderate foxing on portions. Corners darkened (staining?). A former owner backed this with foam board and shrink-wrapped it. Fair. Signed in type at the end by Hugh L. Bond, as President of the Convention, and, in much smaller type, by Geo. C. Maund, as Secretary. 1118. National Negro Business Directory System, Incorporated. The National Negro Business Directory. Wilmington, Del.: n.d. [ca. 1918]. 96p. Wrapper. 27cm. Large circular stain at top of front cover which extends through first half of text. Browned and rather brittle (text printed on newsprint quality paper). Minor wear and some chipping along fore-edge. Fair. Stamped at top of front cover: Newstand [sic] & R. R. Edition. A rare directory which we've not seen before. Most of the directory consists of state by state lists of African American commercial businesses. The Delaware lists seems the most complete (almost two pages). Some of the other states seem pretty sketchy and limited to businesses located in one or two cities -- Oklahoma, for instance, lists only one business (a baker in Boley). Nonetheless, an important pioneering effort which appears to have failed and been forgotten. W. B. Gullins, D. D. is listed as President of the publisher, J. C. S. Nevels as Director of Finance and Claims, and Marie A. D. Madre as chief of Literary and Speakers Bureau. The company was attempting to sell 20,000 shares at $1 per share, and reported that they were located at the Ford Building, 927-929 Market Street in Wilmington. They also claimed to publish or to plan to publish a quarterly called The Commercial Appeal and Advertiser Magazine and a bi-monthly newspaper called The Ethiopian World. 750.00
