58. Autograph Letter, Unsigned, addressed to William H. Seward about Madagascar. Author unknown. Undated but from the text it appears to have been written in 1861. Four pages written on one side of letter-sized sheets. 22 x 28cm. A small Africa-shaped stain on upper right corner of all four pages. Good. This is probably a retained copy or a draft of a letter. In it, the unidentified writer states that he was in Madagascar in July and August of 1861 at the time of the death of Queen Ranavalo [Ranavalona] and the accession of Radama II and feels obliged to write to the U.S. Secretary of State since the writer believes that "no other citizen of the United States enjoys the same facilities." He summarizes the importance and recent history of Madagascar and urges that measures be taken to extend recognition to the government of the new king and to "conclude a permanent treaty upon Proper grounds." 150.00
